The Toronto Raptors Summer League 2025 is upon us. I always love this time of year as it is an opportunity to see new players. Also, it is a time of hope and expectation for the fan base for the coming season. More importantly it is an opportunity for the coaching staff and management to see what potential there in in there new and young players. Yes, the Raptors are at a cross roads. They have just fired their long time president Masai Ujiri as they were not satisfied with the direction and results of the team since the championship. So there is pressure for the team to improve and improve quickly.
Which brings us back to summer league and what the Raptors are looking for. What are they looking for? They are looking to see if any of their young prospects has a potential to become an all star in the near future. This is because the team feels like they have two all stars already in Brandon Ingram and Scottie Barnes. They need that third one to make a serious push for a deep run in the playoffs. Do the Toronto Raptors have any prospects that might fit the bill? I think the team will be looking at three players in particular and they are Ja’Kobe Walter, Collin Murray-Boyles, and Ulrich Chomche. Why these three players? Let’s see better.
Toronto Raptors Summer League 2025 – Why Ja’Kobe Walter?
Why Ja’Kobe Walter? Last season due to injuries and being behind Gradey Dick, Walter did not play all that much earlier in the season. However, as the team was tanking, Walter got more playing and he showed a lot of potential with his shooting both outside and midrange , decision making and flashes of good passing. He did basically the same things as Gradey Dick, except for one thing. Ja’Kobe could defend.
Yes, even though he is six foot four, he has a six foot ten wingspan. He also seems to be willingly to defend. This in itself makes him an intriguing prospect. If he continues to improve his shooting, his dribbling and his drives to the basket, he has the potential to be that third star with Barnes and Ingram. And if he shows improvement in summer league, that changes the calculus for the Raptors in many ways and helps the Raptors to make other decisions regarding their roster.
Why Collin Murray-Boyles?
Why Collin Murray-Boyles? Because he is the ninth pick in a loaded draft and that Raptors had him high on their draft boards. He is probably the best defender of his draft class, he has a strong motor, he can pass in space, drives hard to the basket, and has a high basketball IQ. All this in a six foot seven inch frame, being over 230 pounds and having over a seven foot wingspan. He is a handful for opponents.
However, the one key for the Raptors, is shooting. He is not a great shooter and barely shot the three. However, if he can show potential that he can shoot the long ball then we have a potential all star in the making. Also, can you imagine having a starting line up of him along with Barnes and Ingram. Defensively it would be terrifying for opponents. But the key is shooting and if he can show that he is willingly to shoot the three, then there is potential but it might take a few years.
Why Ulrich Chomche?
Why Ulriche Chomche? Because he is the biggest high risk and high reward player on the team. He has not played basketball very long and is still only 19 years old. Chomche is trying to learn basketball and learn to play the toughest position which is center. He is a long term project. But he oozes potential. He is six foot 11 with a seven foot four wingspan and is fast and graceful. He also has a quick first and second jump to block shots. Oh yeah, he has potential to shoot the three as his form looks good.
The key is how long will it take for him to put it together? Or will he ever put it together. But if he ever does, look out! So if he can continue his positive momentum from G league last year before he got injured, that will give the coaching staff and management hope. If he shows any improvement in summer league, the team will keep investing in him because the pay off could be huge.
Toronto Raptors Summer League 2025 – Conclusion
The Toronto Raptors have a few decisions to make as ownership wants to see improvement from the team. Depending on how well all or some of these players do, will go a long way into making decisions. For example if they see little all star potential in any of these players, do they trade a few assets to find another player with potential? If they find one or more players with potential, do they move a couple of veteran players to open up more playing time for them. Only time will tell but one thing is for sure. All of us will be watching summer league closely.
