The six foot ten centre/forward played for the Toronto Raptors on two 10 contracts. However, he only played briefly as COVID protocols and an injury derailed things for him. So why did the Raptors give a contract to a 26 year old who has bounced between the NBA and G league the last couple of years?

In the brief flashes of play last year, DJ Wilson showed some potential in being a versatile big man who passes, potentially shoots from distance and guards multiple positions. Wilson’s a good rebounder and seems to have a high basketball IQ. If you look at his G league stats from last year, he averaged 19.9 points a game on 55.1% shooting and shot 33.9% from three. He also averaged 11.4 rebounds per game and 3.2 assists per game. These stats show the potential that DJ Wilson can bring to the Raps. However, he is going to have to show it during summer league and training camp as there will be a fierce battle for the last roster spot or two.

To ensure that he stays with the Raptors right until the end of training camp, they gave him a guarantee of $250,000.00. The Raptors didn’t want some other team grabbing him before they can properly evaluate him.

This a good deal for both sides. DJ Wilson gets at least $250,000.00 with the opportunity to fight for a guaranteed contract and roster spot with Toronto.
